The friends you make at the local level know about regional, state, and association events. Leverage time and experiences at local events into larger events. Think of it as laying the groundwork for future business.Īnd those pictures could become the reference materials for a new drawing or painting. If all you do is make friends and take pictures, you’ve had a good day. The purpose of attending such shows on a regular basis is to be seen and to see. If you’re working for a living and building an art career on the side (which most artists are), cutting costs wherever possible is a necessity. Local shows are often free admission and close by, which means reduced expenses all the way around. Photographs I still sometimes browse through. I rarely sold anything on-site, but it was time well spent, and I often went home with batches of new photographs. I got to be a regular and made friends among the horse owners. Sometimes I set up a small booth or just sat in the stands and sketched or watched. I went to those shows as often as I could. When I was getting started, I found regular horse shows hosted by the county fairgrounds in two neighboring counties. If you do dog portraits, look for kennel clubs and so on. Do you paint horse portraits? Check out the local saddle club, or county fairgrounds. Once you’ve identified your most likely clients, go where they are. An afternoon is usually sufficient.Īnd if the thought of finding a “target audience” is too scary, then just look for people who like the kind of art you make.įor more specific help in identifying your target audience, read 3 Ways to Identify the Best Target Audience for Your Art, which I wrote for EmptyEasel. It’s not necessary to spend weeks figuring this stuff out. It does you no good to promote your portrait work to other artists (a lesson I had to learn the hard way.) Nor does it do any good to promote your dog portraits to people who want portraits of their cats and their kids (unless you’re willing to step outside the box not usually a good idea when you’re getting started.) Three, they have money to spend and are likely to spend it on art. Two, they like art and prefer your style. Say, horses or dogs or classic cars (yes, classic cars, houses, and landscapes can fall into the portrait category.) One, they like the same subjects you like. Members of your target audience share three characteristics. So what does a target audience look like? But it does mean those people are more likely to take an interest in your work.ĭoes that mean you never promote your work to other people? No, because you can never be sure who will buy something from you.īut best place to begin promoting yourself as a portrait artist is with people who like the type of art you do. That alone makes it easier to gain portrait work and name recognition.ĭoes that mean everyone in that target audience will become a client? Not at all. It’s important to understand who is most likely to hire you before you start marketing yourself.įigure out the people most likely to hire you, and you can focus on those areas from the start. If you don’t know your target audience, you’ll spend a lot of time and money promoting your portraits to people who just aren’t interested. Doing these things doesn’t guarantee success, but not doing them could hinder progress. There’s much more to becoming a portrait artist than we have time to discuss today, so I’ll begin with four basics. Utility-supplied electricity is expensive in your area (about 10 cents per kilowatt-hour).You live in an area with average annual wind speed of at least 9 miles per hour (4 meters per second).Grid-connected systems can be practical if the following conditions exist: They can also operate during power outages when configured to work in tandem with storage to form a home microgrid to provide back-up power. Modern grid-connected wind turbines will operate only when the utility grid is available. When the wind system produces more electricity than your household requires, the excess is credited and used to offset future use of utility-supplied power. If the turbine cannot deliver the amount of energy you need, the utility makes up the difference. A grid-connected wind turbine can reduce your consumption of utility-supplied electricity for lighting, appliances, electric heating and cooling, and vehicle charging. Small wind energy systems can be connected to the electricity distribution system. A professional installer should help you determine the tower height you will need. The height of a wind turbine's tower also affects how much electricity the turbine will generate. Because energy efficiency is usually less expensive than energy production, reducing your home's electricity use will probably be more cost effective and will reduce the size of the wind turbine you need. A 1.5-kilowatt wind turbine will meet the needs of a home requiring 300 kilowatt-hours per month in a location with a 14 mile-per-hour (6.26 meters-per-second) annual average wind speed.Ī professional installer will help you determine what size turbine you'll need. Depending on the average wind speed in the area, a wind turbine rated in the range of 5–15 kilowatts would be required to make a significant contribution to this demand. Small wind turbines used in residential applications typically range in size from 400 watts to 20 kilowatts, depending on the amount of electricity you want to generate.Ī typical home uses approximately 10,649 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year (about 877 kilowatt-hours per month). If you have a long wire run, it is advisable to invert DC to AC. Your wire run losses are greater when you have direct current (DC) instead of alternating current (AC). Using more or larger wire will also increase your installation cost. A substantial amount of electricity can be lost as a result of the wire resistance-the longer the wire run, the more electricity is lost. Whether the system is stand-alone or grid-connected, you also will need to take the length of the wire run between the turbine and the load (house, batteries, water pumps, etc.) into consideration. If your tower is guyed, you must allow room for the guy wires. When siting be sure to leave enough room to raise and lower the tower for maintenance. System Considerations - It is encouraged that you only consider small wind turbines that have been tested and certified to national performance and safety standards.Your turbine needs to be sited upwind of any buildings and trees, and it needs to be 30 feet above anything within 300 feet. You also need to plan for future obstructions, such as new buildings or trees that have not reached their full height. In addition to measuring or finding out about the annual wind speeds, you need to know about the prevailing directions of the wind at your site. In addition to geological formations, you need to consider existing obstacles, such as trees, houses, and sheds. You can have varied wind resources within the same property. If you site your wind turbine on the top of or on the windy side of a hill, for example, you will have more access to prevailing winds than in a gully or on the leeward (sheltered) side of a hill on the same property. Wind Resource Considerations - If you live in complex terrain, take care in selecting the installation site. ![]() Some general considerations they will discuss with you include: ![]() Your professional installer should help you finding the best location for your wind system. ![]() You can send those out one business day before the event. And always send a message at least a few days past when they said you’d hear back.Īdvance reminders are easier. Think about what the interviewer or hiring manager has said to you about their timeline. Indeed recommends a longer wait of 10–14 days. When you wait instead of rushing to follow up, you show the employer that you respect their time and authority.Īccording to Harvard Business Review, you can follow up a week after your interview if you haven’t heard back. But hiring is a complex process on the employer’s end, too. ![]() Applying for a job is stressful and it always takes longer than you’d like. The same goes for follow-up emails to job applications and interviews. If you’re following up on something that didn’t have a due date, it’s considered good manners to wait a little bit longer - especially if someone’s doing you a favor. Waiting longer not only lengthens the delay but also increases the risk that the person will forget the details of the agreement. If you’re reminding someone about a missed deadline, payment, invoice or shipment, it’s appropriate to send a reminder on the first business day after the due date. The answer depends on what you’re waiting for. How soon after the job interview or missed deadline, or how far in advance of the important event, should you get in touch? It’s not always easy to find the perfect time to send a reminder email. What’s the ideal timing for a reminder email? It’s important not to inundate the hiring manager with messages, but a carefully timed message can help you stand out. Pending job applications or interviews: If you’re in the running for a job, a follow-up email can improve your chances of success. For these, you can send a gentle reminder in advance so everyone stays on track. Upcoming important events: Some events and deadlines are too important to risk missing. A reminder can help to re-establish contact and find out if the task just slipped the person’s mind or if there’s something else you can do to help. ![]() Lapsed communication: Most people have been in a situation where someone promised to do something and get back in touch, but that message just doesn’t come. It’s better to send an email reminder before too much time passes. If one person promises to complete a task by a particular day and it doesn’t happen, entire projects fall behind. Missed work deadlines: No worker is an island in today’s business world. Your business depends on that product or invoice, so it’s fine to get in touch and check in. Alternatively, maybe you ordered something and it hasn’t arrived. ![]() Vendor issues: Sometimes you’re the one who needs to pay but a vendor hasn’t sent you an invoice. Don’t feel guilty about sending a payment reminder if a deadline has passed and you haven’t received those funds. Things happen but you still have the right to your money. Late payments: Payment on or before a deadline is standard business etiquette. ![]() “Our stakeholders had so many constraints and limitations because we didn’t have the right infrastructure in place,” says Nelson.
